Patty Apoian, MSW
Riverbend Counseling Staff
Charlottesville Office
Patty Apoian, MSW-Supervisee, is a trauma-informed clinician who brings warmth, clinical skill, and deep respect for the healing process into her work with clients. Her approach is person-centered, trauma-informed, and rooted in the belief that people have an innate capacity for resilience, growth, and recovery when they are met with safety, compassion, and support.
Patty has experience working with individuals impacted by trauma, substance use, mental health challenges, grief, shame, family disruption, and major life transitions. She draws from evidence-based and integrative approaches including CBT, DBT, ACT, Motivational Interviewing, mindfulness-based practices, parts work, and somatic awareness. Patty is especially passionate about helping clients understand the connection between trauma, the nervous system, emotions, relationships, and patterns of coping.
In her clinical work, Patty creates a calm and supportive space where clients can begin to feel seen, heard, and understood. She believes therapy is not about “fixing” what is broken, but about helping people reconnect with the parts of themselves that have been hurt, hidden, or overwhelmed. Her work is guided by compassion, curiosity, and the belief that healing is possible at every stage of life.
Patty earned her Master of Social Work degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and has experience in residential substance use treatment, crisis stabilization, group therapy, individual counseling, and trauma-focused care. She is honored to walk alongside clients as they move toward greater self-understanding, emotional regulation, safety, and wholeness.
