Michael Wingate, MSW

Riverbend Counseling Staff

Charlottesville and Culpeper Offices

Michael is a Supervisee in Social Work, based in Charlottesville, Virginia, specializing in trauma-focused care for children, teens, and young adults. Originally from New York, Michael brings over 15 years of experience in mental health work, including extensive experience in acute crisis care, along with a calm, steady presence to some of the hardest moments in a young person's life. He works with clients navigating trauma, grief, anxiety, and depression, helping them build lasting coping skills and reconnect with a sense of stability and agency.

Michael holds a Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed his undergraduate degree at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He is currently practicing as a Supervisee in Social Work, working toward full licensure. An Eagle Scout, he carries the values of service and resilience into his clinical work, believing that young people are capable of remarkable growth when met with safety, consistency, and the right support.

Before turning to clinical work, Michael spent time as a touring musician and winemaker, experiences that have shaped his understanding of creativity, identity, and connection, and that still show up in his practice today. Outside of work, he enjoys writing and playing music, listening to just about everything, and goofing around with his two dogs.
